“Buildings should become extensions of their environments, materials drawn from regional resources, organic architecture is an architecture from within outward”.

Calderwood Development Principles

Creating A Flagship Development

There are so many relevant principles and policies which need to be considered when creating a successful place especially one the scale and nature of Calderwood. We have outlined some of our principles throughout this document, but here are a few more.

Scottish community

Life Outside The Home…

In order to create a fully functioning new community with pride of place and a bonding community spirit, the residents need to spend time outwith their homes. To attract them out of the home we must provide attractive, stimulating places. Places to walk, cycle, shop, socialise, enjoy and participate in. Too many large housing developments have no attractive features outside the home and when the community is not connecting, it becomes a bit soulless.

It’s A Scottish Village…

We may incorporate many design and development ideas from further afield but the incorporation of local vernacular features and references will ensure Calderwood’s identity is very definitely Scottish.

Scotland is a beautiful country and we want to showcase how great it can be to live here. Calderwood should be a flagship development for both Scotland and West Lothian.

Many Hands…

To deliver an outstanding development that stimulates and inspires whilst avoiding repetition, we feel it should have the creative input from many sources, including architects, designers and a variety of quality house builders.

Optimise The Weather…

The Scottish climate is not often blessed with long periods of fine weather, so when the sun does shine and the wind stops blowing we should be in a position to capitalise and enjoy it. Buildings and public spaces should be orientated to optimise sun and shelter. This will create an more enjoyable environment, attracting people, which will enhance social integration. It also has the added benefit of making buildings more energy efficient and sustainable. The Scandinavians have demonstrated that people will populate and enjoy sunny, sheltered areas, even when actual temperatures are 10 degrees or lower.

Happiness…

Happiness is the best measure of success. If the Calderwood development is to be successful it must be a happy, friendly place.
