Research

Local and UK Vernacular

A development the scale of Calderwood offers a vast array of potential master plan layout and configuration options. In order to contemplate the most suitable, Stirling Developments have carried out an intensive study tour program, looking at a wide range of examples, both historical and new build, in the UK and abroad.

Montage, best practice examples

The historical U.K examples included a lot of good Scottish references, such as rural market towns like Linlithgow, Haddington and some of the smaller Lothian and Scottish villages.

A variety of English villages, such as Ludlow were also studied.

Good examples of new build were also found, where developers have endeavoured to create a sense of place. Hemingway Design’s Staiths, with its friendly Home Zones, the Princes Foundation’s Pounbury, which has drawn on the best practice adopted by traditional and historical developments, the very sustainable and beautiful Living Villages in Shropshire and the idyllic Lower Mills estate in the Cotswolds, are all good examples of modern place making.
