A Successful Place : Living In Harmony With Nature
A Beautiful, Eco-friendly Environment
Calderwood is blessed with an idyllic setting. The beautiful Almondale and Calderwood country park curves protectively round its northern boundary, with the development set amidst gently rolling attractive farmland. These are treasured assets that will have a major influence on this development. The form of the village will be informed by these landscape assets.

In order to preserve the Landscape Value of the Country Park Landscape Architects and Ecologists have been brought in at an early stage to develop an integrated system of open spaces and ensure the preservation of existing biodiversity.
Attractive, interesting ‘feature nodes’ will be established to ‘pull’ people through green corridors.
Some landscape features will be enhanced to form water features, extended woodland trails, parks, scenic footpath and cycle ways all creating a network of nature corridors and spaces which will be inhabited by indigenous species as well as residents. Every effort will be made to ensure that nature flourishes within the development.

A network of green spaces will exist within the masterplan and inform and articulate the patterns of new development. A village park and various pocket parks will be created to ensure each household is close to nature. These spaces will evolve to enable both active and passive recreation for new and existing communities.
There is a great opportunity for East Calder to have a beautiful, eco-friendly zone extending from the community to the new high school with a network of safe, scenic routes to school meandering through inspiring landscape.
One of the development’s key features is its relationship with the landscape of the country park. In order to create an appropriate natural boundary and preserve the integrity of the existing landscape periphery, a soft edge will be created using a native meadow of wild flowers, accommodating a footpath and cycleway. Communities both old and new will access landscape spaces without disturbing biodiversity.
