Calderwood Nursery Planting Day 2009

Following our 'Pay Homage to the Heavenly Sent Land'principle, we have established a propagation nursery to grow trees for Calderwood's future landscape.

Around 60 primary 4 pupils from East Calder & St Pauls Primary Schools participated in the first Calderwood Nursery planting day on 14th May 2009.

Eventually the pupils will plant out the trees into our new landscape and each will have their own personal tree and commemorative plaque. Calderwood will continue to foster community involvement and engagement in the project- this is the first step in turning our proposals into a vibrant new place.

The pupils planted out the tree seeds they had gathered from Almondell Country Park in our autumn seed hunt, as well as helping with additional species which we sourced from a local supplier. They also planted fruit & vegetables which will be grown organically and can be eaten by the children & their families later this year.

Calderwood Seed Hunt- November '08

A principal objective of the Calderwood development is its successul integration with nature and the local environment. To help promote this we are developing an on site nursery to cultivate tree species with local providence to enrich our future landscape.

By way of involving the local community we organised our first seed hunt within the Almondell Country Park with Primary 4 classes from East Calder and St Pauls Primary Schools on 12th November 2008.

As you can see from the photos below, the day was a great success & we look forward to working with both schools again in Spring 2009 to plant out the 600 conkers (Horse Chestnut) & 300 acorns (Oak) in our nursery.

East Calder Gala Day- Public Consultation

On the 14th June 2008 Stirling Developments hosted an Exhibition on our Calderwood Project at the annual East Calder and Wilkieston Gala Day.

We had been invited to attend and provide an opportunity for the local community to learn more of our plans and progress of our Calderwood Development.

The Gala Day, attracted around 5,000 people, and provided us with a fantastic opportunity to engage with the majority of the local population.

Often public consultations struggle to attract a few hundred people, the gala day enabled us to engage with a few thousand.  Visitors to the marquee had the opportunity to meet members of the Stirling Development team, and discuss the project.

Calderwood Design Competition

Stirling Developments recently organised a residential design challenge for 9 Scottish architectural practices.

Calderwood is a Scottish project and we want to encourage Scottish architects to engage in the project.  To underscore this principal we invited a selection of acclaimed and emerging Scottish architectural practices to produce a residential design for a Calderwood neighbourhood.

The resulting work showcased a diverse range of ideas and concepts, endeavouring to respond to Calderwood's environment, while illustrating the architectural practice's vision for the residential elements of their selected neighbourhood.

Grand Prix winner "The habitation of an Agricultural Form" by Kevin Jones, illustrates a desire to allow the parallel lines of agriculture to inform the new development.  In addition prominent landscape and grasscrete roads will soften the development.

One of the aspirations of the Calderwood project is to encourage and foster new Scottish talent.  It's an excellent opportunity for students to get involved in a prominent live project and the project will benefit from generating fresh, young ideas.

In order for the students to get a full understanding of the project a well attended site visit was arranged!
